Home HUMAN INTEREST Church nativity scene depicts Mary, Joseph, Jesus as refugees in cages (ASL – 12.9.19)
Transcript
Pastors at a church in California say if their controversial nativity scene sparks dialogue, then that’s a good thing.
The scene in front of Claremont United Methodist Church in Los Angeles depicts Jesus, Mary and Joseph as refugees.
They are each in separate cages topped with barbed wire and baby Jesus is wrapped in a silver foil blanket.
Church officials say the goal is to draw attention to the conditions faced by migrants seeking asylum in the United States.
The lead pastor at the church says Mary, Joseph and Jesus are the world’s most famous refugee family who fled Israel into Egypt to escape King Herod’s decree that all baby boys be killed.
The church’s Facebook post said “What if this family sought refuge in our country today?”
The display successfully sparked conversation.
One person posted on Facebook that it was disrespectful to put Jesus in a cage and said it was shameful to mix political views with the nativity scene.
But others thought the scene was a powerful display, saying if the image of Mary, Joseph and Jesus in cages makes people feel uncomfortable, good!
