Right after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked the House Judiciary Committee to begin writing up articles of impeachment against President Trump, he fired back with a tweet that said “If you’re going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate.”
But a hurried impeachment process was condemned by the House Republicans’ sole witness in Wednesday’s Judiciary Committee hearing, law professor Jonathan Turley.
Turley said trying to remove an elected president of the United States takes time and work.
Turley sentiments were echoed by senior counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway.
Conway said “If you going to do something as serious as impeaching a president, you can’t rush it.”
According to sources familiar with the matter, White House attorneys have spent weeks preparing for a Senate trial, crafting the President’s legal defense which White House counsel Pat Cipolonne will lead.
However Trump laid out part of his strategy on Twitter, saying he wants House Intel Chair Adam Schiff, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Joe and Hunter Biden to testify in the Senate trial.
The next impeachment hearing at the House Judiciary Committee has been set for Monday.
That’s when committee members will hear evidence from congressional staff counsels.
The White House has already announced it will not participate in the impeachment hearings.
