At least three people were killed, several others were injured and the suspect is dead as the FBI now investigates whether the shooting at a naval base was terror related.
But officials say it’s still too early to tell.
The gunman has been identified as Mohammed Alshamrani, a Saudi national and second lieutenant in the Saudi Royal Air Force who was in the US for aviation training since 2017.
A law enforcement source says he was vetted coming into the country and a background check ran after the shooting appears to show nothing of concern.
The King of Saudi Arabia called President Trump personally to express his condolences and said the actions of Alshamrani do not represent the feelings of the Saudi people.
Despite condemnation of the attack by the Saudi government, Florida Senator Rick Scott is now calling on a review of military programs that train foreign nationals in the US.
Scott said “There is no reason we should be providing state-of-the-art military training to people who wish to harm us.”
