Venice’s Mayor said that the city is on its knees after reaching record levels of flooding due to acqua alta.
Acqua Alta is an exceptionally high tide.
And experts say is only going to get worse.
Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte has declared a state of emergency for Venice as a result of the worst flooding in more than half a century.
Water levels over the weekend are expected to be much lower than prior days but still in the “high” to “very high” range.
According to the official forecast from local government, the water level in Venice is expected to reach 59 inches.
The flooding is worsened by an additional storm system moving through the region which is creating strong winds in the Adriatic Sea.
On Friday, St. Mark’s Square, a popular tourist attraction, was closed.
One of artist Banksy’s iconic pieces of art on the wall near Campo Santa Margherita shows a young refugee wearing a life jacket.
Ironically that piece of art has now become submerged in water.
