Tens of thousands of people are under mandatory evacuation orders after the Saddleridge fire exploded in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County.
Driven by the wind, the wildfire spread in what officials called an uncontrolled fashion, crossing major freeways.
At least one person has died.
Officials are already starting to evaluate homes that have been lost to the fire and they say residents should not wait for someone to knock on the door to leave.
Yet, despite the strong Santa Ana winds and the evacuation orders, some residents are staying put, hoping to protect their home a little longer.
The fire started around 9 PM Thursday, growing rapidly and engulfing more than 4,000 acres.
And critical fire conditions are expected to continue through the weekend with low humidity and very dry vegetation.
