The FDA is warning people to stop drinking mineral solution products sold online.
The products are sold online under various names like Miracle or Master Mineral Solution or Water Purification Solution (WPS) and claims to cure autism, cancer, HIV, hepatitis, flu, acne and a host of other illnesses and diseases.
According to James Humble, the man who discovered MMS, the solution is an oxidizer that kills pathogens and destroys poisons in the body so it can heal properly.
The MMS website estimates more than 20 million people have used the solution and hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved or improved.
But the FDA says the product is 28 percent sodium chlorite, an industrial chemical used as a pesticide and for waste management treatment.
FDA officials say ingesting it is the same as drinking bleach and they are urging consumers not to use it or give it to their children.
The agency says severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, a life-threatening low blood pressure caused by dehydration and acute liver failure are among the side effects experienced by people who drink the product.
