Today is day two of International Week of the Deaf!
The theme of the day is: Inclusive Sign Language Environments.
LEAD-K stands for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids.
According to its website, the campaign aims to ensure families with Deaf/Hard of Hearing children receive full information about language access to ensure that each Deaf/Hard of Hearing child in a language-rich environment.
Research shows that when Deaf children are exposed to a rich visual language environment (American Sign Language) it gives them the foundation for a first language and school readiness.
LEAD-K’s focus is to “promote language quality, a basic human right for all Deaf babies advocating for Deaf children to have access to both American Sign Language and English.”
The campaign aims to end language deprivation through laws in every state.
And through providing “language milestones and assessments that measure language milestone achievements” and by collecting data to hold the current education system accountable.
To this date 15 states have in place a law in support of LEAD-K.
