Senate sets up final impeachment process
The Senate is adjourned and the impeachment trial into President Trump will began its final stage on Monday.
As anticipated by a 51 to 49 margin, the Senate voted against hearing from witnesses and obtaining documents in the impeachment trial Trump, which sets up his likely acquittal of all charges.
Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called Friday’s vote “a tragedy,” saying “America will remember this day, unfortunately, where the Senate did not live up to its responsibilities, turned away from the truth and went along with a sham trial.”
The Senate will now map out the final stages of the trial.
Closing arguments are now expected to start Monday with a vote to acquit Trump likely on Wednesday afternoon.
That’s one day after Trump’s scheduled Tuesday night State of the Union address.
For nearly the entire length to the impeachment trial, Trump’s aides viewed the State of the Union address as a pivotal moment they hoped would present an opportunity for Trump’s vindication.
Now White House officials have accepted the fact that Trump will not walk into the House chamber next Tuesday as an acquitted president.
