President Trump has become the third U.S. president in history to be impeached.
Yesterday (Wednesday) the House passed both articles of impeachment, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, against the president after an intense six-hour debate.
The House voted almost entirely along party lines, meaning almost everyone who voted, votes aligned with their political party.
The House voted 230-197 to charge Trump with abuse of power and 229-198 to charge him with obstruction of Congress.
Just two Democrats voted against both articles and another Democrat voted for one impeachment article.
A Republican lawmaker said Jesus had “more rights” before his crucifixion than Trump in the impeachment inquiry.
And Democrat and House Intelligence Committee Chairman, Adam Schiff, said in his closing statement that we should care about our allies, Ukraine, and about a “country struggling to be free and democracy.”
The vote to impeach Trump occurred while he was at a “Merry Christmas” rally in Michigan, where he blasted Democrats for the impeachment push.
So now that the House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Trump, what’s next in the process?
Well the Senate was expected to hold a trial to determine if Trump will be removed from office, which would likely take place in January.
But last night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wouldn’t commit to sending the articles of impeachment over to the U.S. Senate, which is controlled by mostly Republicans.
Some Democrats want to hold the articles until they are sure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell agrees to the Senate trial procedures Democrats have requested.
McConnell accused House Democrats of “getting cold feet.”
When the trial goes to the Senate, removing the president is unlikely.
A two-thirds majority is needed to do that, which means only 34 Republicans will have to vote against the articles for Trump to stay in office.
