It was a very busy day on Capitol Hill today.
Thursday morning acting Director of Intelligence Joseph Maguire was grilled by lawmakers for his handling of a whistleblower complaint regarding a phone call between President Trump and Ukraine’s president back in July.
The White House released a rough transcript of that call.
The transcript shows Trump repeatedly pushed the Ukrainian leader to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.
A transcript of the unofficial whistleblower complaint was also made public.
In the official complaint, the whistleblower says “In the course of my official duties, I have received information from multiple US government officials that the President of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 US election.”
Democratic leaders say the complaint supports their decision to begin an impeachment inquiry.
But Trump calls it another political witchhunt.
Lawmakers questioned Maguire about why he initially refused to share the whistleblower complaint with Congress, despite it being required by law.
Maguire responded by saying it was not his responsibility to determine the truthfulness of the complaint.
That responsibility was the Inspector General’s.
However Maguire did invoke executive privilege and refused to answer whether he disclosed the whistleblower complaint to Trump.
The identity of the whistleblower still remains anonymous.
