On Friday thousands of mourners packed the pews, aisles and overflow room at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish to remember the life of Pete Frates.
Frates is the man who is credited with sparking the viral video sensation in 2014 call the “ice bucket challenge.”
In 2012 Frates was diagnosed with ALS at 27-years old.
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
There is no cure.
According to the National Institutes of Health, most people with ALS die from respiratory failure usually within 3 to 5 years of displaying symptoms.
Frates used his diagnosis to launch a movement.
The ALS ice bucket challenge involved dumping icewater on your head, making a donation to an ALS organization and challenging others to participate.
The challenge raised $115 million in two months.
More than 17 million people accepted the challenge, including me.
Check it out.
Rest in peace Pete Frates.
Hello everybody.
I’ve been watching a few videos of the ice bucket challenge.
I thought no one would tag me to do the challenge.
Jamie tagged me.
OK. I’m grabbing the opportunity.
But I only have that size bucket.
But I have ice in it. Let me show y’all.
Max will pour it on me and when it’s done I will tag other people.
I’ll type it in and you will see it later.
Now are y’all ready?
Holy crap! That was cold!
