Thousands of protesters danced, cheered and celebrated in the streets after hearing Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rossello had resigned.
Rossello made the announcement shortly before midnight in a video message on Facebook, saying that staying on as governor was not a viable option.
The governor’s resignation comes after more than a week of protests.
The protests erupted after the publication of hundreds of offensive group messages between Rossello and his inner circle.
The profanity laced messages included homophobic and misogynistic language, even jokes about victims of hurricane Maria.
If Rossello didn’t resign, lawmakers were ready to begin impeachment proceedings.
Justice Secretary Wanda Vazquez as is expected to take over as governor.
Many people in the Deaf community say Rossello’s resignation couldn’t come soon enough.
