Firefighters in Maui say a raging, out-of-control fire forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and animals.
The fire started Thursday morning.
By Thursday afternoon, the fire was burning out of control.
It has scorched 3,000 acres so far.
The Maui Humane Society relocated its animals in crates and kennels to a nearby high school.
The fire affected access Kahului Airport so flights were briefly diverted.
Operations have returned to normal.
Hawaii’s governor says TV mogul Oprah Winfrey, who owns a home there, has given officials access to her private road to fight the fire.
