Hollywood actress Kim Basinger is in Seoul, Korea lobbying lawmakers to garner support for a bill that would make the killing of the dogs for food illegal.
The dog meat trade is a decades-old tradition.
In 2016 Humane Society International reported around 2 billion dogs are being kept in 17,000 facilities in South Korea.
However last year the biggest dog slaughterhouse in the country was shut down, a move hailed by animal-rights groups as a sign public opinion is turning against dog consumption.
Some lawmakers say the movement to end the dog meat trade in South Korea is gaining steam but not everyone agrees.
Dog farmers from around the country are speaking out, saying ending the dog meat trade would not only eliminate the industry but their livelihood as well.
