History was made Thursday night at the 92nd Scripps national spelling bee.
After 20 rounds, the bee ended with eight co-champions.
After the 17th round, organizers realized that there were only enough challenging words left for three final rounds.
Sure enough, all of the remaining competitors spelled those words perfectly.
All eight will receive a $50,000 prize.
This year’s national spelling bee featured 562 contestants ages 15 and younger, representing all 50 US states as well as several territories and countries.
